Doing bits

June 28, 2019

A couple of days ago I was just leaving the house with my daughter Ros (19) when she said, “Hang on a minute, I want to change this dress – it’s not doing bits.”

“It’s not what?”

“Doing bits.”

Doing bits, it seems, means working well. Getting it right. Being successful.

I later asked Fred (15) if he knew the expression, and of course he did. He said if you’re doing bits you’re doing well at everything. Sorted on all fronts. Smashing it all over the place. It is said of people, usually, rather than dresses, with an attitude of admiration or envy.

I rather like it. I like its air of modest understatement. I wonder if anyone will ever say it of me? (They won’t, I know.)
