Somewhere a dog barked: a new variation

February 16, 2015

I’ve blogged before about the literary cliché Somewhere a dog barked, and the fun one can have by producing variations on it – see “Somewhere a dog barked” (20th March 2012) and “Somewhere a dog barked again” (6th December 2012). I came across an excellent example in a novel I was reviewing recently, Danny Wallace’s Who is Tom Ditto? The narrator is on the phone and in a zoo, and, asked where he is, he replies (for tactical reasons), “In the supermarket”. And then: Somewhere, an elephant trumpeted. Beautiful.

PS. My review of Tom Ditto will be in the Independent on Sunday on 22 February.
