Two more literary clichés

A while ago I wrote about the literary cliché, somewhere a dog barked. Here’s another couple I’ve noticed recently: He took the stairs two at a time, and as his eyes became accustomed to the gloom. They are particularly common in thrillers. Maybe I’ll start a collection of literary clichés here. Contributions welcome.
