More mixed metaphors: mea culpa

July 8, 2014

It’s all very well my pouncing on other people’s use of mixed metaphors, but today I am going to pounce on myself. I’ve just been reading over a section of the work in progress that will one day be my PhD thesis (“Should a liberal state ban the burqa?”) and came across the phrase “without recourse to the blunt instrument of a blanket ban”. Blunt instruments and blankets? What was I thinking of?
It just goes to show that it’s much easier to see motes in other people’s eyes than beams in one’s own. Still, at least I spotted it before submitting the chapter.
